The Maqui plant is known the world over by many different names including Aristotelia chilensis, Baie de Maqui, Chilean Maquei Berry, Chilean Wineberry, Chilean Wine Berry, Clon, Jus de Maqui, Macqui, Macqui Berry, Maquei, Maquei Berry, Maquei Super Fruit, Maqui Berry, Maqui Berry Juice, Maqui Juice, and Queldron.
The purple Chilean maqui berry is one of the most antioxidant-rich foods. It contains an abundance of vitamin C, calcium, iron and potassium, anti-aging anthocyanins and polyphenols, and anti-inflammatory compounds.

The Maqui plant is an evergreen shrub (Aristotelia chilensis) growing throughout the pristine Patagonian mountain region of southern Chile. The berries have been both a staple food and part of rituals and ceremonies for the Mapuche Indians—one of the longest-living cultures in the world. The maqui berry was considered a sacred plant symbolizing goodwill by Mapuche communities.

The rich, dark purple berries are said to contain more antioxidants than any discovered food on earth, making them an excellent addition to any diet. The Maqui berry has a wonderful, slightly tart flavor that has been described as having hints of blackberry, blueberry, watermelon and acai.
Information about the Maqui Plant: Maqui berry (Aristotelia chilensis) is a vibrant purple fruit that grows abundantly across fields and hillsides in southern Chile. As a plentiful berry bush that grows wild, cultivation has proven to be unnecessary. Maqui contains 300 percent more anthocyanins and 150 percent more polyphenols than any known food or drink, including wine. For generations, the Mapuche Indians have consumed maqui as a fermented beverage. As legend has it, the Mapuche Indians are the only unconquered people of South America. Nourished by maqui, they fought the Spaniards for over 300 years. And won. Today, Mapuche families come together to hand pick the berries in a traditional fashion. The plants are naturally organic as long as their growing habitats are protected from industrial pollutants and encroachment.

A sweet tasting and healing berry, maqui has been used successfully for a variety of ailments. Tumors, hemorrhoids, diabetes, colon cancer, fevers and diarrhea are just a few of the health concerns that respond well to maqui berry. High in a type of anthocyanin called delphinidin, maqui is a potent anti-inflammatory. Since chronic inflammation contributes to a host of degenerative diseases like arthritis, diabetes, heart disease and cancer; consuming ample quantities of inflammation curbing maqui is a smart choice.

Maqui packs a powerful punch by supporting heart health as well as balanced glucose levels and body weight. Antioxidants found in the berry prevent cholesterol from oxidizing in the blood which helps to deter cardiovascular disease -- including stroke, hardening of the arteries and heart attack. Consumption of maqui curiously causes a notable increase of insulin which suppresses blood glucose. With this action, energy is stabilized without peaks and crashes, thereby limiting fat storage and assisting in weight management. As an added perk, maqui helps to prevent food-borne illnesses through its antibacterial properties.

Rich in antioxidants, maqui counteracts free-radicals and radiation that contribute to aging. Maqui is able to survive (and thrive) in harsh climates by producing extraordinary amounts of UV ray-deflecting phytochemicals which help to protect the plant. These compounds also protect humans. By consuming ample amounts of phytochemicals, damage caused by sun exposure, toxins and pollution is prevented and even reversed. All this helps to promote a radiant, ageless complexion.
As you can see from the chart, the Maqui Berry possesses an unmatched ability to absorb injurious, free radicals that attack the body and contribute to the aging process and many diseases. Our bodies are constantly being bombarded by these free radicals because of the air we breathe, the water we drink, the pesticides on our fruits and vegetables, the chemicals we clean with, the preservatives in our processed food, etc. Eating foods high in antioxidants is one way we can help our bodies combat these free radicals.
Growing, Maqui Berry Plants are easy to grow evergreen shrubs. They will grow in almost any type of well draining soil, light-sandy, Medium-loamy, and heavy-clay. It prefers slightly acidic or neutral soils. The Maqui Berry needs full sun and can be grown indoors if given enough light. Maqui Berries can be grown under a strong, full spectrum, artificial light or they can be set by a window that gets direct sunlight for at least 8 hours every day. What are you waiting for?
