The Goji Berry Plants (Lycium Barbarum) we sell are between 5 - 12 inches tall and originate from the Himalayas. They will produce small, beautiful white and purple trumpet shaped flowers. As the summer progresses the flowers will mature into Goji Berries. From here you can eat the sweet berries fresh, dry them or make your own juice!

Information about the Goji Berry Plant: The Goji plant is known the world over by many different names including Lycium barbarum, Wolfberry, Red Medlar, Bocksdorn, Cambronera, Duke of Argyll's Tea Tree, gou qi zi, Fructus lycii and Matrimony Vine. Originating from many areas of Asia, including Western China, Mongolia, Tibet, and the Himalayan expanse. Westerners have only lately discovered the goji plant, and there is much eagerness in health circles these days of its immense effects.

Health Benefits, Goji Berries are reported to contain 18 Amino acids (six times higher than bee pollen), more Beta Carotene than carrots, more Iron than spinach, and 21 Trace Minerals. Goji Berries also contain Vitamin B1, B2, B6, and Vitamin E (rarely found in fruits). The Goji Berry contains more Vitamin C by weight than oranges Goji berries are 13% protein! This bright red berry also contains many complex compounds, and phytonutrients, which explains in part, the incredible health benefits being experienced by people today. The Goji Berry also contains extremely high levels of antioxidants. It is quite possibly the highest antioxidant food on earth.

Tibetan Medicine, Goji Berries have been used in Tibet for at least 1,700 years. Tibetan Medicine includes these berries in the treatment of kidney and liver problems. They are also used in Tibet to lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and cleanse the blood. Goji Berries have a long history of use in the treatment of eye problems, skin rashes, psoriasis, allergies, insomnia, chronic liver disease, diabetes and tuberculosis. Goji Berries are also used by the people of Tibet to increase longevity and as a general health strengthening tonic.

Modern Science, Modern science has shown that this bright red berry not only contains extremely high levels of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, but also contains many unique phytochemicals, polysaccharides, and complex compounds that scientists are just beginning to understand.

Goji Berries contain the following complex compounds: Betaine, which is used by the liver to produce choline, a compound that calms nervousness, enhances memory, promotes muscle growth, and protects against fatty liver disease. Physalin, which is active against all major types of leukemia. It has also been used as a treatment for hepatitis B. Solavetivone, a powerful anti-fungal and anti-bacterial compound. Beta-Sitoserol, an anti-inflammatory agent. It has been used to treat sexual impotence and prostate enlargement. It also lowers cholesterol. Cyperone, a sesquiterpene that benefits the heart and blood pressure. It has also been used in the treatment of cervical cancer. The Goji Berry is also being called the world’s most powerful anti-aging food. It is rated #1 on the ORAC scale (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), which measures the antioxidant level in foods. It is a test developed by USDA researchers out of Tufts University in Boston.

As you can see from the chart (see pictures), the Goji Berry possesses an unmatched ability to absorb injurious, free radicals that attack the body and contribute to the aging process and many diseases. Our bodies are constantly being bombarded by these free radicals because of the air we breathe, the water we drink, the pesticides on our fruits and vegetables, the chemicals we clean with, the preservatives in our processed food, etc. Eating foods high in antioxidants is one way we can help our bodies combat these free radicals.

Growing, Goji Berry Plants are easy to grow perennials (they come back every year!). They will grow in almost any type of soil, light-sandy, Medium-loamy, and heavy-clay, but they tend to flower and fruit better in a well drained soil of moderate quality. Goji Berry plants have an extensive root system and are very drought tolerant once established. Goji Berry plants prefer full sun to partial shade, but plant them in full sun for the best Goji Berry production. Goji Berry plants can survive winters down to -15 degrees Fahrenheit and hot summers above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The Goji Berry grows as a thick bush reaching 6-10 feet tall with vines that can get 12 feet long. Heavy pruning of the Goji Berry plant will keep this bush looking nice and will also help it produce more delicious Goji Berries. In early summer this beautiful plant is covered with small purple and white trumpet shaped flowers. Goji Berry plants can add beautiful color to any landscape. In late summer these pretty little flowers are followed by glossy, bright red Goji Berries. The Goji plant continues to flower and produce Goji Berries right up until the first heavy frost. The fresh Goji berries are incredibly juicy and sweet that can be consumed raw, fresh or dried. The leaves of the plant nicknamed as matrimony wine or youthful tea can be used in salads and drinks. The Goji Berry can be grown indoors if given enough light. Goji Berries can be grown under a strong, full spectrum, artificial light or they can be set by a window that gets direct sunlight for at least 8 hours every day. What are you waiting for?
